This butterfly is an occasional stray to south Texas. It is a large brown skipper with a stubby tail and large 'gold' spots on the forewing. The underside hindwings are a purplish brown and have a white band. This butterfly uses Orchid trees (bauhinia) as a larval host. South Texas has a variety of orchid trees and I start seeing this occasional stray in my yard from Spring through Fall.
